Best Electric Vaporizers

Electric vaporizers come in two flavors: Passive or Active. Active vaporizers have a small fan built in that blows hot air over your herb, vaporizing it. The warm vapor is then pushed through a tube directly into a mouthpiece or into a vapor balloon or bag, which can then be inhaled from. Passive vaporizers lack a fan and depend on the user to create air suction to carry heat over the herb.

Since there are big differences between Passive and Active vaporizers, we will rate them separately.

The undisputed champ when it comes to fan-powered electric vaporizers has to be the famous Volcano Vaporizer. Built on a conical metal base, the Volcano Vaporizer is the vaporizer almost everyone is familiar with. It works fantastically and looks great.

The only downside to the Volcano is that it is expensive. The original Classic Volcano Vaporizer with dial controls sells for around $550. The more modern Volcano Digit Vaporizer with LED display goes for nearly $700.

Our two favorite passive electric vaporizers are the VaporTower (approx $199) and VaporBox (approx $140, $169 for Deluxe Handsfree version) vaporizers.

Both units feature a gorgeous wooden chassis and use high-quality ceramic heating elements. To use them, the user puts their ground herb into a glass "bowl" at one end of the 3 foot "whip"-a vinyl tube attached to a glass mouthpiece. The bowl end is inserted into the preheated vaporizer, and the user puts his mouth on the mouthpiece and inhales slowly. The user's suction draws cool air into the vaporizer, which flow over the ceramic heating element and instantly heats to the correct temperature so it can then pass over the herb, through the tube, and into the user.
